City of Smoke
City of Smoke is a multimedia documentary project showcasing the catastrophic pollution problem in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital city.
I served as a photographer and videographer on this project which was directed by Peter Bittner.
The following images highlight the coal cycle that begins in Nalaikh, a town right outside of Ulaanbaatar where semi-legal mining operations continue to draw coal from an officially condemned, state-owned coal mine.
City of Smoke received financial support from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, the UC Berkeley Institute of East Asian Studies, the James L. Knight Foundation, and the American Center for Mongolian Studies.
